National CAIS Committee Now in Place (April 25, 2005)
OTTAWA, ON, April 25, 2005 – A national committee including producers and representatives of both levels of government is now in place to review and suggest improvements to the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) program to ensure that it is an effective cornerstone in helping farmers to manage income risks in the future. Federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Agriculture made the announcement today.
The committee will be chaired by Mary Komarynsky Assistant Deputy Minister, Farm Financial Programs of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The committee includes 22 producer representatives and 15 federal and provincial representatives. Four federal officials, ten producer representatives and one Aboriginal producer are appointed by the federal government. Provinces and territories have each appointed one government official and one producer representative to the committee.
The National CAIS Committee (NCC) will:
- Make recommendations on proposed changes to CAIS.
- Advise CAIS administrations on issues related to the ongoing operation of the program.
- Manage the process of hearing requests for a review from program participants who feel that program policies have not been correctly applied in the verification of their form.
The CAIS program is delivered by the federal CAIS administration for British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Yukon, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. In Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Island, the program is delivered by provincial administrations.
To date, over $1.3 billion has been distributed to producers through the CAIS program. Governments are committed to providing effective programming that meets the needs of producers across the country.
